Togetherness Index 2024

Can communication heal a divided nation?

The Togetherness Index measures the impact of communication on social cohesion across Australia. Now in its fifth year, the Index reveals how well Australians are connected through the way we listen, share stories, and communicate with one another. 

The 2024 Index score is 57, highlighting continuing challenges in building unity. The Togetherness Index report provides crucial insights into the root causes of division and offers a path for how effective communication can help rebuild trust and strengthen community bonds.

Key Findings from the 2024 Togetherness Index:

  • 47% of Australians believe the country is more divided than a year ago.
  • 54% cite the cost of living crisis as the most divisive social issue, followed by wealth inequality (27%).
  • Only 32% of Australians feel their voices are heard in local community discussions.
  • Just 33% of Australians believe the government listens to their needs.

For communications professionals, these insights are a call to action. The Togetherness Index identifies five key communication principles: Closeness, Listening, Optimism, Stories, and Effectiveness (CLOSE), that can foster unity and restore public trust.
